Cosmetic dentistry

If you want to have an incredible smile that even Hollywood stars would envy, you should seriously consider cosmetic dentistry. With the help of two procedures, teeth whitening and tooth veneers, you can have whiter teeth within a few days or weeks and a smile that can lead to professional or personal success.

Not all individuals are allowed to undergo cosmetic dentistry procedures, especially teeth whitening, because of the involved risks. Teeth whitening is not something the pregnant or lactating women should risk since the whitening procedure could irritate the pulp, cause sensitivity to the teeth or even affect the pregnancy. Laser bleaching is not recommended to persons who are under 16 because the pulp chamber or the tooth nerve is not sufficiently developed. Another category that should avoid the teeth whitening is that which suffers from allergies to different products; in this case a previous dentist appointment is necessary. Cosmetic dentistry is not suggested to persons having gum diseases, cavities or exposed roots. Cavities should be treated before the teeth whitening intervention because the substances used in the whitening procedure could penetrate in the inner areas of the tooth causing sensitivity.

Anyone undergoing cosmetic dentistry operations should not have unrealistic expectations. Smokers for example should realize that, in order for the teeth whitening to be effective, they should refrain from their habit, especially during the whitening procedure. Brownish shaded teeth or blue-gray teeth do not respond to the teeth whitening as well as the yellowish ones, but they can be treated using porcelain veneers.

There are several options which might be taken into consideration when talking about teeth whitening: whitening toothpastes, whitening gels or strips (all of these being used at home and requiring no supervision) or laser bleaching. This last cosmetic dentistry procedure may have some side effects and should be avoided if possible.

Whitening toothpastes are common for teeth whitening and, being cheaper than anything else, they are very popular as well. The main difference between the regular toothpastes and the whitening ones is that the first ones remove stains from the teeth’s surface by mild polishing while the latter category contains slight chemical agents which help stain removal to an advanced level. The drawback of this cosmetic dentistry method is that it lightens the teeth’s color with only one shade, which is not very effective if we think that professional teeth whitening operations improve the color with three to eight shades.

Another thing that can be successfully used for the teeth whitening is the whitening gel: this is applied to the surface of the teeth with a small brush, twice a day, for 2 weeks. The effects can be seen in a couple of days and they last for approximately four months. Another cosmetic dentistry procedure that follows almost the same rules is the one that uses whitening strips. They are very thin, practically invisible and they are applied to the teeth’s surface. This whitening procedure takes 14 days with an appliance time of 30 minutes daily and the effects are visible for four months. Both these teeth whitening techniques use peroxide, but the concentration is much lower than the one used in the cosmetic dentistry process performed in the dentist’s office. Of course, the effects are not that powerful, but the teeth are protected so no further problems will appear.

Some other cosmetic dentistry method leading to the teeth whitening is the tray-based procedure. This consists in filling the mouth with a guard-like tray containing a whitening solution. The tray is put over the teeth and it must be worn for a certain period of time, starting with a few hours or even during the night. The process should be repeated for four months or even longer depending on the expected effects.

All these cosmetic dentistry operations have some risks which should not be ignored. Some of the most frequent side effects in teeth whitening are increased sensitivity or mild irritation. It’s not something serious, but they create a discomfort that can be avoided and that could bother certain persons.

To obtain long lasting effects, cosmetic dentistry should be done using the guidance of some rules. Products that create stains on the teeth’s surface should be avoided as much as possible. After consuming food or beverages, immediate brushing should be performed after the teeth whitening procedures. A good oral hygiene is always an imperative. It also should be mentioned that this cosmetic dentistry is not irreversible and the whitening procedure should be repeated for as many times as necessary. Depending on the used method, the cosmetic dentistry procedure can take place every 6 months.

A cosmetic dentistry option that is irreversible is the tooth veneer. It involves a placement of porcelain veneer over the teeth, whitening them this way. The main disadvantage of this method is that it is very expensive compared with the previous ones.

So, there are many cosmetic dentistry methods one could use for teeth whitening and everybody should choose the most appropriate one considering all the factors: main effects, side effects, costs, availability.
